Economic dependance on Suez Canal
Many Western European countries depend on the Suez Canal for their oil trade. The route is particularly significant for France, Greece, and the Netherlands. As the chart shows, this corridor is important to both oil consumers and exporters. But ships carrying Russian oil and tankers from the Persian Gulf countries of Saudi Arabia and Iraq, which now create the main flow of oil and oil products, in the Russia-Asia and Persian Gulf-Europe directions, respectively, are not in the crosshairs of the Houthi missiles, and both Moscow and Riyadh have quite comfortable relations with Iranian proxies.
