1.       Japan PM Kishida Plans South Korea Visit. Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is considering visiting South Korea on 20 Mar, broadcaster Fuji TV reported. Kishida seeks to meet President Yoon Suk Yeol and discuss issues including North Korea ahead of the South Korean legislative election in April.     

2.       North Korea Fires Multiple Cruise Missiles Off Its East Coast: South Korea Military. North Korea fired multiple cruise missiles off its east coast South Korea’s military said. The missiles were launched off the eastern coastal city of Wonsan, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

3.       NATO Chief Says U.S. Needs Allies after Trump Comments. NATO said that Europe had increased its spending on defense and the United States needed allies, days after former President Donald Trump suggested that Washington might not protect countries that did not spend enough.                                                   

4.       Ukraine Says it Sank Russian Large Landing Warship in Black Sea  . Ukraine destroyed a Russian landing warship off the coast of occupied Crimea in an operation with naval drones that breached the vessel’s port side and caused it to sink, Kyiv’s military spy agency and armed forces said.

India/South Asia

5.       PM Modi Holds Bilateral Meetings with UAE Counterpart, Madagascar President on Sidelines of World Government Summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his UAE counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and discussed a wide range of areas of bilateral cooperation including trade and investment.

6.       Manipur Armouries Targeted by Mobs, 1 Shot Dead. The state this week has been witnessing intense gunfights, particularly in the peripheral areas of Meitei-majority Imphal East district and Kuki-Zomi-majority Kangpokpi district.

7.       Tear Gas Fired, Farmers Injured at Punjab-Haryana border. Protesting farmers of various unions started marching towards the national capital. The Delhi Police deployed at the borders are as of now guarding the borders and ensuring the maintenance of law and order amid the farmers’ ‘Delhi chalo’ call.

8.       APHC Urges UN, HR Bodies To Take Note Of Kashmiri Political Prisoners’ Plight The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has appealed to the United Nations and international human rights organizations to take serious note of victimization of illegally detained Kashmiri political prisoners languishing in various jails of occupied Jammu and Kashmir and India.

9.       Indian Magazine Contests Modi Govt Order to Remove Report on Army’s Torture & Murder of Civilians in IIOJK. The Caravan magazine, India’s leading platform for investigative journalism, has contested a Modi government order to take down its story on torture and death of civilians at the hands of the Indian army in Poonch district of occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

10.      Central Asian, EU Envoys Set to Meet on Afghanistan. Special representatives of Central Asian countries and the European Union (EU) are all set to a meeting on Afghanistan during which economic and social issues will be discussed.

11.      Kabul, Tehran Discuss Border Security Cooperation. The Ministry of Defence says security officials from Afghanistan and Iran have discussed border issues and bilateral cooperation.

12.      Turkey’s Erdogan Lands in Cairo on First Visit Since 2012  . Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in the Egyptian capital on his first visit since 2012, sealing a thaw in ties between the regional heavyweights.

13.      Israel’s Military Says It Began ‘Series’ Of Airstrikes In Lebanon. The Israeli military said its fighter jets “began a series of strikes in Lebanon,” raising fears of a war between the two countries after months of cross-border fire.

Iran

14.      ‘Sabotage Attacks’ On Iran’s Gas Pipelines Cause Major Disruptions.  The scale of damage and disruption caused by multiple gas pipeline explosions in Iran became increasingly apparent, as homes and industries in several large provinces were impacted.

15.      White House Tells Politicians Not to Help Iran by Blocking Ukraine Aid. The Biden administration is pressuring the House of Representatives to approve more funding for Ukraine, saying a failure to do so would amount to helping Russia and Iran.

16.      CJP Isa Directs Police to Handle Blasphemy Cases 'Diligently'. Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa directed the police to ensure that “religion is not used for personal purposes” and emphasized handling blasphemy cases “with diligence”.

17.      CTD Arrests Banned Daesh Terrorist from Sahiwal. Sources in CTD said that explosive material IED, prima card, detonator, battery, electric circuit and cash recovered from possession of the terrorist who was nabbed from Sarwar Chowk on Faisalabad Road.

Economy

18.      Shares at PSX Gain More than 900 Points over Clarity on Political Front. Shares at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) traded in the green over clarity on the political front, gaining more than 900 points.

19.      Economic Coordination Committee Defers Plan to Recover Rs100bn from Gas Consumers. While approving an already allocated Rs7.5 billion subsidy package for the upcoming Ramazan, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet could not decide how to recover Rs100bn in additional money from gas consumers in the remaining four and a half months of the current fiscal year as the commerce minister pressed for reducing cross-subsidisation burden on industry.

20.      Fazlur Rehman Urges PML-N To Sit In Opposition. JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said his party has ‘completely’ rejected the results of the 8 February general elections, inviting PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif to sit in the opposition benches with the former.
